I’M NOT HERE
SHARON BILLINGE
Artist statement:
The paintings and prints in this exhibition take two images and mediate them through a variety of processes to manipulate the distance between viewer and subject. The work itself draws upon how images of the people we love function, their use in rendering presence, as a means of preservation, and as constructions whose meanings shift over time.
SPACE A
UNSETTLEMENT
SARAH HENDY
Artist statement:
Consider Melbourne now at the peak of its prosperity. The drawings of unsettlement depict scenes of our neglected industrial landscape with the future in question. The romantic technique pays homage to these “dead zones” as the essential shelters and passages that have supplied our city. Described with saturated patterned pen marks the images hang on the paper with a texture fashioned much like a tapestry or blanket. The knitted scenes show evidence of a prosperous industrial time, with an uncertain future; one of greater upheaval, population movement and resource scarcity. These could be our nostalgic glory days.
SPACE B
GUESS WHO?
RYAN SISTERS
Artist statement:
This is the first collaboration between sisters Natalie and Pip Ryan. Exhibiting as the Ryan Sisters they will explore ideas associated with humour, horror, death and the absurd. Guess Who? will mark the first of an ongoing collaboration that will continue to exist outside their own practises.
PROJECT SPACE
EMMA HAMILTON
SALT FLAT
Artist statement:
Engaging with ideas of suspension and doubling, the project Salt Flat by Emma Hamilton explores the pink lakes of the Mallee region of Victoria. In this arid environment the lakes occasionally become a series of vast dry lakebeds blanketed in a dense layer of salt. Salt Flat examines a landscape in stasis, seeking to understand this mass of water preserved as a cast form. This project forms part of the artist’s ongoing investigation into white landscapes.

AURA
LAUREEN LANSDOWN + JAMES MURNANE
Artist statement:
Aura is a small visual treatise on the allure and beauty of light. Laureen Lansdown and James Murnane draw from sources where light emerges from darkness, in nature and in constructed sacred spaces. Engaging with the psychological, physiological, spiritual and transcendental qualities and natures of light, they have been led to rework and uniquely represent their encounters in these environments, gently highlighting the resplendent luminosity of the light sources.

EDEN’S FAMILY
JUSTIN WILLIAMS
Artist statement:
In this new series of paintings, I have been painting people that I have a connection or no connection to, focusing on the painting informing me of a memory that represents that figure as apposed to the physical appearance of that person, as the works started to come together I was reminded of old stories that were forced down my throat in primary school about Christianity. The Garden of Eden always stood out to me. I am not a religious man as such, however I always enjoyed the stories. I approached the work in the same way, allowing the process to inform the works, not particularly getting tied down into representation of the main characters in the story of Adam and Eve, but imagining what would go on in Eden, the other unmentioned people and things that might be encountered in that world.
